The importance of sustainable logistics
In 2018, the Energy Transition Commission reported six industries that are highly dependent of fossil fuels: cement, steel, plastics, road freight, sea freight and aviation. Three of the six reported industries concern logistics. Despite this, companies still do not consider logistics for their sustainability strategy. Without a doubt there is a need for any organization to develop a strategy that reduces logistics emissions. The six challenges of logistics carbon footprinting
We all are aware that we need to reduce our carbon emissions. Customers are increasingly demanding that companies have a clear vision for achieving net zero emissions, and new regulations such as the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) in the European Union require companies to take action. Many companies are committing to initiatives like the Science Based Target Initiative (SBTI) and Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) or becoming B-corps, demonstrating that the need for carbon reductions is widely recognized .
Determining the best way to start a net zero journey can be a challenge. The first step in an effective carbon reduction program is to calculate and understand your current carbon footprint (scope 1, 2, and 3). There are various frameworks and tools available to help you detail your logistics carbon emissions, however, many companies still have questions about the level of detail required, the methodology to use, and how to make the insights actionable.
